Phantom Smells?
I think I’m going crazy.
For the last 4 days, I have been smelling cigarette smoke all the time.
I have never smoked, don’t know anyone who smokes. I have showered, washed everything that will fit into the machine, shampooed the carpets, and washed the walls. My house is immaculate and it smells like someone is puffing smoke into my face. Not stale smelling, not a lingering odor, but like a burning “fresh” cigarette. I smell it everywhere. In the car, the yard, my job where smoking is not allowed, the grocery store, friends houses, everywhere.
I know if you hear things that aren’t there you are mentally ill, but what about smell?
What should I do? I can’t imaging trying to explain this to a doctor, and what would they do anyway?
Thanks.
Dirty vents don’t explain why I smell it in the car, the grocery store, or anywhere but in my house.
This is called an olfactory hallucination. These usually stem from a medical problem, not a mental one.
